In Australia, a young woman in her twenties became trapped upside down for seven hours after falling into a three-meter (approximately ten-foot) deep crevice while trying to retrieve her dropped cell phone.
According to reports from CNN on Tuesday, the woman dropped her phone into a rock crevice while taking photos during a walk with friends in the rural village of Laguna in New South Wales.
As she attempted to retrieve her phone, she slipped and became wedged in the crevice, unable to escape. To make matters worse, the accident occurred in an area with no cell phone reception.
Her friends called for help using the emergency number, Triple Zero (000), and she remained stuck for over an hour until rescuers arrived.
Despite the efforts of both police and firefighters, the rescue operation proved challenging. The accident site was in a densely overgrown area, making vehicle access difficult. The only way to free her was to remove seven boulders weighing between 80 and 500 kg (176 and 1,102 pounds). There was also a risk that the rocks could crack and fall on her during the rescue. After approximately seven hours, rescuers finally managed to free her and transported her to the hospital.
A rescue worker commended her resilience: “She’s incredibly tough. I might have passed out in that situation. But when we arrived, she remained calm and did her best to follow our instructions.”
