The Detroit Tigers are emerging as a possible destination for Kim Ha Seong, the South Korean shortstop, in Major League Baseball (MLB).
According to MLB.com, the Tigers are looking to bolster their roster at the Winter Meetings, particularly seeking a right-handed hitter and a starting pitcher. Detroit’s infield needs include both shortstop and third base, and sources indicate the team has expressed interest in Kim and Houston Astros star Alex Bregman.
MLB Trade Rumors (MLBTR) notes that Kim Ha Seong, known for his excellent contact hitting, plate discipline, and speed, could provide a much-needed boost to a Tigers lineup that has struggled with stolen bases and on-base percentage in recent seasons. As a right-handed hitter, Kim would also help balance a Detroit lineup that has been heavy on left-handed batters. Furthermore, Kim’s ability to play shortstop and third base makes him an attractive option, addressing two areas of concern for the Tigers.
Kim Ha Seong is one of the most intriguing free agents of the offseason. While the San Francisco Giants’ recent acquisition of shortstop Willy Adames may have reduced his options, Kim’s exceptional defensive abilities continue to make him a sought-after player. The upcoming Winter Meetings, set to take place in Dallas, Texas, from December 10-13, are expected to be a key moment for Kim’s free-agent market.
However, MLBTR cautions that Kim’s recent shoulder surgery may complicate his contract negotiations. The timeline for his return is still uncertain, with his agent, Scott Boras, projecting that Kim could be back by late April. On the other hand, San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller has raised concerns that Kim might not return until as late as July.
Kim Ha Seong signed a 4+1 year contract with the San Diego Padres in 2021, valued at $28 million guaranteed, with a maximum potential value of $39 million. This winter, he entered the free-agent market after failing to reach an extension agreement with the Padres. In August, Kim suffered a shoulder injury during a game against the Colorado Rockies, which required surgery in October. He is now focused on rehabilitation, aiming to return to the field by late April or early May next year.
