In response to President Yoon Suk Yeol’s urgent public address on Thursday morning, Han Dong Hoon, leader of South Korea’s People Power Party (PPP), expressed his shock, saying, “The president’s statement completely blindsided me. The content of the address essentially amounts to an admission of insurrection.” Following the president’s remarks, Han announced plans to convene the party’s ethics committee to discuss possible expulsion or disciplinary action against Yoon.
Immediately after the address, Han ordered the central party’s ethics committee to meet. “It has become increasingly clear that the president is no longer capable of fulfilling his duties,” Han said. “I have urgently instructed the ethics committee to convene and discuss potential measures, including expulsion and other disciplinary actions.”
Ahead of a general meeting to elect the party’s new floor leader, Han further emphasized in the National Assembly, “As the leader of this party, I believe we must act swiftly and lawfully to suspend the president’s duties. I propose that we adopt impeachment as our official stance.” His statement ignited strong resistance from pro-Yoon lawmakers, including Representatives Kang Myung Koo and Lee Cheol Kyu, who argued with Han during the meeting.
