A collision between a light rail train and a university shuttle bus in Los Angeles, California, has resulted in injuries to approximately 50 passengers.
According to the LA Fire Department, the accident occurred around 11:54 a.m. (GMT) on the 30th of April. It happened on the road between the LA Natural History Museum and the University of Southern California (USC). The city’s ‘Metro Rail light rail and a USC shuttle bus both traveled in the same direction, colliding side-on. Several passengers aboard the train and bus were injured.
The fire department reported at least 55 injured, with two, including the bus driver and one passenger, in serious condition. Sixteen train passengers are reportedly in stable condition. The remaining 37 people suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene before returning home.
The fire department confirmed there were no children or teenagers among the injured.
The light rail train involved in the accident operates from the east side of LA to the western beach of Santa Monica. At the time of the accident, there were about 150 passengers on board. It is reported that only the bus driver and one passenger were on the USC shuttle bus.
The LA Police Department is currently investigating the source of this accident.
A spokesperson for LA Metro, which operates the city rail, told the Associated Press that the bus had approached the tracks and hit the train.
