Sam Altman, the creator of ChatGPT and CEO of OpenAI, has pledged to donate the majority of his wealth.
According to the Associated Press on the 28th (local time), Altman joined the list of donors of The Giving Pledge, a charitable organization for billionaires worldwide. The Giving Pledge is a group of billionaires with over $1 billion in assets that pledged to donate more than half of their wealth. Bill and Melinda Gates, the founders of Microsoft Corporation, and Warren Buffet, the Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, co-founded the organization in 2010. To date, more than 240 billionaires from 30 countries have pledged to donate most of their wealth to charity.
Altman, who is openly gay, pledged the 18th with his partner and tech investor, Oliver Mulherin. He stated, “Without the efforts and dedication of many people who have provided the foundation for us to get this far, we would not have been able to make this pledge.”
According to Forbes, Altman’s net worth, including investment returns, totals approximately $1 billion.
Before becoming CEO of OpenAI, Altman led Y Combinator, one of the world’s top startup accelerators, and invested in numerous startups. He is also one of the largest shareholders holding a 7.6% stake of Reddit, a U.S. social networking service (SNS) company that went public on the New York Stock Exchange in March.
