Drinking Soda Like Water for a Year Wrecks Teen’s Teeth—Here’s the Aftermath

Must read

The dental health of a 17-year-old girl who drank soda like water for an entire year has taken a dramatic turn for the worse.

According to China Dotcom, Wang Lei developed the habit of drinking 4 to 5 bottles of cola daily, replacing water with soda for an entire year. She would also go to bed without brushing her teeth at night. As a result, her teeth began to discolor, first turning brown and eventually black. By October, she experienced severe pain even from drinking a sip of water or feeling a cold breeze. A dental exam revealed that 15 of her teeth had decayed.

Dr. Wang Li, her primary care dentist, explained, “Carbonated drinks contain acids, and consuming them in large quantities over an extended period can wear down the enamel on your teeth. Once the enamel is damaged, teeth become extremely sensitive. Exposure to hot, cold, sour, or sweet substances can cause intense pain and discomfort. This can make it difficult, if not impossible, to eat normally.” Enamel, the outermost layer of the tooth, comprises minerals and inorganic substances and gives teeth their white color.

Wang Lei had been struggling with everyday tasks, including eating, due to the severe condition of her teeth. She was also so self-conscious about her damaged smile that she avoided showing her teeth in public. However, after two months of intensive treatment, her teeth and smile significantly improved. She proudly shared, “I’ve completely quit drinking cola,” adding, “I no longer cover my mouth when I smile.”
