The Republican Party is pushing for a censure resolution against Representative Al Green (D-TX), who was removed from the chamber for protesting during President Donald Trump’s address.

On Tuesday, Representative Dan Newhouse (R-WA) introduced the censure resolution against Green, stating that his actions disrupted the joint congressional session and violated appropriate conduct standards.

According to Axios, the resolution is backed by Republican House leadership, which holds the majority. It also reported that the Freedom Caucus, a hardline Republican group in the House, is preparing its own separate censure resolution.

Representative Troy Nehls (R-TX) is also working on a similar resolution. However, The Hill noted that while censure is a formal measure confirmed by a House vote, it carries no real consequences.

Green was removed from the chamber after continuing to voice objections despite the House Speaker’s efforts to stop him at the beginning of Trump’s speech the previous night. After his removal, he told U.S. media that he protested because Trump and the Republican Party were pushing for Medicaid budget cuts.

In 2009, the House passed a censure resolution against Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) after he heckled then-President Barack Obama, shouting, “You lie!” during a congressional address.
