A shooting early Sunday morning at Tuskegee University, a historically Black college in Alabama, resulted in one death and 16 injuries, according to reports from the Associated Press, citing local authorities. Currently, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
The victim, an 18-year-old male, was not a student at the university, authorities confirmed.
Among the injured, 12 people suffered gunshot wounds, while 4 others were injured in ways not directly related to the gunfire. Some of the injured are reported to be students at the university.
The FBI has opened an investigation into the shooting and is urging anyone with videos or information related to the incident to come forward.
The shooting occurred around the time of Tuskegee’s 100th Homecoming Week event. Videos posted on social media show people rushing to take cover in a parking lot as gunshots were heard.
The university said that law enforcement secured the scene, and investigators continued gathering evidence. It also confirmed that additional safety measures are being implemented for students and that parents have been notified.
This incident follows a string of shootings at college Homecoming events this fall. On October 19, a shooting during a Homecoming celebration at Albany State University in Georgia left one person dead and several others injured. On the same day, a shooting at a Homecoming event in Lexington, Mississippi, resulted in three fatalities and eight injuries. Earlier, on October 12, a shooting near Tennessee State University in Nashville led to one death and nine injuries.
