A female tourist who was trying to capture her perfect shot at a famous Indonesian volcano site tragically died after falling roughly 246 feet (75 m) down into the crater. Due to the heat, it was difficult for the rescue team to reach her, and it reportedly took about two hours to recover her body.
According to the New York Post on the 23rd (local time), Chinese tourist Huang Li Hong (31) was posing for a photo at the Ijen volcano on Java Island in Indonesia when she fell into the volcano’s crater and died on the 20th.
Ms. Huang had climbed to the crater’s edge, a popular tourist spot in the area, with her husband to watch the sunrise when the incident occurred. She was taking pictures while maintaining a safety distance of about 6.5 to 9.8 feet (2-3 m) from the cliff’s edge, but she tripped on her clothes, lost her balance, and fell. The guide explained, “I warned her that it’s dangerous to get too close to the crater,” adding, “She moved back for a better backdrop.”
The Ijen Volcano, where the accident occurred, is a well-known tourist destination famous for its dangerous acidic lake and sulfur that boils up. It is particularly well-known for the Blue Fire phenomenon. The Blue Fire refers to the blue flame produced by the sulfur gas and air reaction at temperatures exceeding 96.8 degrees Fahrenheit (36 degrees Celsius).
