José Mourinho, the head coach of Fenerbahçe inTurkey, recently mentioned the championship bonus from the 2017-2018 English Premier League (EPL) season.
During a press conference on Thursday before the UEFA Europa League match against Manchester United, Mourinho was asked about Manchester City’s alleged financial regulation violations. He responded, “We won the Europa League in 2017 and finished second in the Premier League in 2018. If Manchester City faces a point deduction and we are declared champions for that season, I could still receive the championship bonus and medal. I believe there’s still a chance.”
Mourinho managed Manchester United from 2016 to 2018, during which Manchester City claimed the top spot in the 2017-2018 season, with Manchester United finishing second. Manchester City is facing 115 allegations of financial regulation violations spanning a 14-season period and is engaged in legal disputes with the Premier League. Depending on the outcome, Manchester City could be stripped of its championship trop.
Reflecting on the day he was dismissed from Manchester United in December 2018, Mourinho stated, “I’ve been rooting for Manchester United’s success since the moment I left. I have positive feelings toward the club and its fans.” Regarding Erik ten Hag’s continued support as manager, Mourinho expressed a favorable view: “When a club believes in and supports a manager, the coach can remain for multiple seasons, gaining stability and trust. It’s essential to create an environment that fosters team development.” However, he also conveyed disappointment, adding, “Manchester United didn’t provide that for me.”
