Golf legend Tiger Woods announced Tuesday that he will not compete in this year’s Hero World Challenge, the PGA Tour event hosted by his foundation. In a statement on social media, Woods said, “While it’s disappointing, I won’t be competing in this year’s tournament. I’ll be focusing on my responsibilities as the tournament host.”

The Hero World Challenge, launched in 2000, is an exclusive event featuring 20 world’s top golfers, including major champions and select invitees. Although considered an unofficial event, it awards world ranking points due to its highly competitive field. This year’s tournament will occur from December 6 to 9 at Albany Golf Course in the Bahamas.

Woods, a five-time winner of the Hero World Challenge, has historically used the event as a stepping stone to return to competitive play following injuries or surgeries. His absence this year raises questions about his ongoing recovery, as Woods has been limited to just five PGA Tour appearances in 2023. In September, he underwent additional back surgery to address persistent pain.

In his announcement, Woods highlighted some of this year’s participants, including his close friend Justin Thomas, Australian golfer Jason Day, and Nick Dunlap, who recently became the first amateur in 33 years to win on the PGA Tour.

While fans remain eager for Woods’ return, his withdrawal signals that the 15-time major champion is prioritizing his health and recovery before making another attempt at competitive play.
