Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung Min expressed frustration following his team’s crushing 6-3 loss to Liverpool in their English Premier League (EPL) Round 17 clash on Monday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The defeat marked one of Spurs’ most disappointing performances of the season.
Despite scoring three goals, Tottenham had no answer for Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who delivered a stellar performance with two goals and two assists. Son, who had been in strong form with goals in his previous two matches, started on the left wing but struggled to make an impact. He was subbed off in the 77th minute after a quiet display.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Son said: “Very disappointed with the result and conceding six goals is really painful. What can I say? As a footballer, you always want to play. At the moment we have to work hard. I don’t want to make any excuses. We tried to be as sharp as possible.
“There’s no question, they are top of the league. You can see quality players with top discipline. There’s a reason they are top. If you give them a mistake, they punish you.”
Son reflected on Tottenham’s defensive struggles, saying, “Football can be ruthless. One mistake, and you pay the price. Even when you sit back, you can still concede. We need to stick to our game plan, whether things are going well or not.” He ended on a note of determination, urging unity: “Today is a tough pill to swallow for the players, fans, and the club, but we need to stay united and come back stronger.”
The loss leaves Tottenham in 11th place in the EPL standings with 7 wins, 2 draws, and 8 losses (23 points). Meanwhile, Liverpool remains in first place with 12 wins, 3 draws, and 1 loss (39 points), holding a four-point lead over second-place Chelsea.
