João Fonseca of Brazil has claimed his first ATP Tour victory.
Ranked 99th in the world, Fonseca defeated Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo, ranked 28th, with a score of 2-0 (6-4, 7-6) in the final of the Argentina Open, held in Buenos Aires on Sunday. This marks Fonseca’s first ATP Tour singles title. The winner’s prize money is $100,160.
At 18 years and 5 months old, Fonseca ranks seventh among the youngest ATP Tour singles champions since 1990 (based on first-time title winners). The youngest record in history is held by Lleyton Hewitt of Australia, who won at 16 years and 10 months in 1998.
Fonseca has been on an upward trajectory, winning the ATP Next Generation Finals in December 2024. The Next Generation Finals is an event where top-ranked players under 20 compete.
Fonseca stated, “Although the tournament was held in Argentina, the support from Brazilian fans who came to the stadium gave me great strength,” adding, “I will definitely achieve my dream of becoming world number one and winning a Grand Slam title.”
