A man in his 20s has been arrested in Houston, Texas, for supporting the Islamic extremist group ISIS.
On Thursday, the Southern District of Texas U.S. Attorney’s Office, in coordination with the FBI, announced that 28-year-old Anas Said was arrested on November 8 and charged with providing material support to ISIS.
Said is accused of attempting to assist ISIS, which has been designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government. According to reports, several social media accounts linked to Said contained messages supporting ISIS and its violent activities.
During an investigation, authorities discovered evidence that Said had been producing and distributing ISIS propaganda. Searches of his home, vehicle, and electronic devices revealed further information linking him to terrorist-related activities. Additionally, Said reportedly admitted to researching ways to attack a local military recruitment center, offering his home as a potential safe house for ISIS operatives, and claiming he could carry out an attack similar to 9/11 if he had the necessary resources, according to Fox News.
The FBI issued a statement, saying, “We have prevented a potential terrorist attack right here in Houston.” If convicted, Said faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
