As his presidency drew to a close, President Joe Biden reflected on the 2024 election, expressing his belief that he could have defeated President-elect Donald Trump had he chosen to run for re-election.

In an interview with USA Today on Wednesday, Biden was asked if he thought he could have won the 2024 election. He responded, “It’s probably presumptuous, but based on the polls, I believe I could have won.” However, when asked if he felt physically capable of serving another four years, Biden acknowledged the challenges, saying, “I’m doing fine so far,” but added, “I never wanted to be president when I’m 85 or 86, which is why I’ve talked about passing the baton.”

Biden also addressed concerns about political retribution from Trump’s administration, specifically regarding the potential preemptive pardoning of specific individuals before his term ends. “That depends on what positions he places people in,” he said. Reflecting on a post-election meeting with Trump, Biden remarked, “I tried to make it clear to him that seeking revenge over past issues is directly contrary to his interests and that there is no need for that.”

Looking back on his presidency, Biden highlighted his accomplishments in foreign diplomacy and economic policy. He pointed to his efforts in restoring relationships with U.S. allies that had been strained under Trump, saying, “I think I’ve helped manage fundamental changes happening globally, from Europe to Latin America, the Middle East, and the Far East.” On economic achievements, Biden mentioned Samsung’s investment in the U.S. as an example of his administration’s success in strengthening the economy. As for his legacy, Biden said, “I hope to be remembered as the president who worked to restore America’s leadership in the world and to recover the economy.”

At 82 years old, Biden initially sought re-election but ultimately decided to step down, citing concerns about another term’s physical and mental demands. His hoarse voice during TV debates and occasional off-topic responses raised concerns about his ability to continue in office at such an advanced age. As the oldest presidential candidate in U.S. history, Biden chose to pass the Democratic nomination to Vice President Kamala Harris, though Trump ultimately defeated her.
