A devastating bus accident in southern Mexico has resulted in at least 11 fatalities after the vehicle veered off the road and flipped over.
According to local outlets El Sol de México and La Jornada, the incident occurred on Monday morning (local time) along the Mitla-Tehuantepec highway in Oaxaca’s Santo Domingo Naro area. The bus fell 30 to 40 meters off the road before overturning. Authorities have confirmed that at least 11 passengers lost their lives, with around 20 others injured.
Local reports say that Senator Antonio Morales shared on social media that most of the victims were supporters of Mexico’s ruling party who had attended a political gathering in Mexico City. Jesús Romero López, Oaxaca’s Secretary of the Interior, stated in a radio interview that the victims were likely members of the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), the country’s ruling political party, who were returning from the event in the capital.
On Sunday, the day before, a large rally was held in Mexico City’s Zócalo Square. The event, organized by the Mexican government and overseen by Claudia Sheinbaum, was meant to announce the suspension of U.S. tariffs and promote national unity.
