The United States has imposed sanctions on mainland Chinese and Hong Kong-based companies that have assisted Russia in its invasion of Ukraine.
On the 1st of May, the U.S. Treasury and State Department announced new sanctions on over 300 entities. This includes third-party companies and individuals that have helped Russia acquire materials for its defense industry and organizations related to Russia’s military-industrial and biochemical weapons programs. The sanctioned entities include more than ten companies based in mainland China and Hong Kong. The Treasury Department stated, “The U.S. and many international partners are particularly concerned about Chinese and other third-party organizations supplying crucial materials to Russia’s military-industrial base. Such support enables Russia to continue its war with Ukraine, posing a significant threat to international security.”
During U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to China in April, the U.S. strongly urged Chinese companies to cease their material support for Russian military operations. The U.S. also warned that it would take direct action, including imposing sanctions on involved Chinese companies if China does not intervene.
